Venezuela's Opposition Claims Fraud As Socialists Sweep Regional Elections

Reuters: Dispute over Venezuela vote could spark more unrest, sanctions

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela’s opposition refused on Monday to recognize a surprise win for the ruling socialists in weekend gubernatorial elections, raising the prospect of new protests and foreign sanctions against President Nicolas Maduro’s government.

Maduro’s candidates took 17 governorships, versus five for the opposition, in Sunday’s nationwide poll, according to the pro-government electoral board.

The socialists’ strong showing came despite devastating food shortages, triple-digit inflation, and a collapsing currency. Polls had suggested the opposition would easily win a majority.

WNU Editor: This result will only mean the following .... hyper-inflation will continue, 70% of the country will go hungry to bed hungry tonight, and Venezuela's debt payment obligations will not be met in the coming months thereby making a horrible situation even worse.

Editor,

No one in their right mind would vote for this. Operative words "no one in their right minds." Some are not in a "right mind."

Perhaps the result really is legitimate. The current Venezuelan leadership is anti-American. Anti-Americanism is easy and very profitable.

Winning an election based upon anti-Americanism is easy. Governing and improving the lives of one's citizens, now that can be hard. Perhaps tbe Venezuelan government should reach out to America, it's leaders, and Americans.

Doing so would mean low interest loans that you can pay back or not pay back at your discretion with no strings attached. This would help the lives of Venezuelans which EVERY Americans wants to do. Even though most Americans are struggling to feed our families we STILL want to help Venezuelans even at our own expense.

For Venezuelans to accept our help would mean swallowing their pride and rejecting the anti-Americanism they've been fed. At this point, I don't think they can do that.

B. Poster,
The situation is beyond solvable now. All of its assets have been used as collateral for Chinese and Russian loans .... the wealth of the country has been plundered .... and what is left is a society where money is worthless and the services that so many have grown to be dependent on are no longer there. Two months ago I listed a number of Twitter accounts that are documenting what is happening in that country. The despair is beyond description.
