North Korea Rejects Diplomacy With The U.S..

The European Union is set to impose tougher new sanctions upon the regime in North Korea. Reuters.

CNN: North Korea rejects diplomacy with US for now, source says

Washington (CNN)A North Korean official reaffirmed Pyongyang's commitment to developing a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching "all the way to the East coast of the mainland US," on Monday, telling CNN that the rogue nation is currently not interested in diplomacy with the US until it achieves that goal.

North Korea is not ruling out diplomacy, but "before we can engage in diplomacy with the Trump administration, we want to send a clear message that the DPRK has a reliable defensive and offensive capability to counter any aggression from the United States," the official said.

If you were the leader of a country that currently has no dealings with the US, assuming you follow the news both world and US local, and given the early history, what would your motivation be to enter into negotiations with the US?

I agree with WNU Editor that North Korea will not negotiate until it has nuclear weapons on missiles that can reach the United States mainland.

As things stand now, North Korea is on course to attain that ability. How soon? Who knows. Western intelligence has consistently underestimated North Korea's progress developing both nuclear weapons and missiles.

The question is: what will North Korea negotiate, once it has weapons capable of striking the USA's mainland? In my view, at that point North Korea will want to negotiate the terms by which the USA unwinds its presence in South Korea, and its military alliance with South Korea. In other words, North Korea will want to settle the Korean war on terms dictated by the Fat Boy.

I respectfully disagree with those who see North Korea's pursuit of such weapons as defensive, i.e. to prevent the USA from overthrowing the North Korean regime. North Korea's conventional weapons have deterred both South Korea and the USA since the armistice in 1953. In my view, North Korea's pursuit of nuclear weapons and missiles to deliver them is aggressive. If we allow Fat Boy to complete his development of such weapons, we must be ready to know how we will respond when he demands our departure from South Korea and their subordination to North Korea, and threatens to nuke Los Angeles if we don't comply. Will any U.S. president trade Los Angeles for Seoul?

what do you suggest we do other than badmouthing Obama?
Are you willing to sign up and attack? have a draft and have kin go to war?
Or do you prefer being an elite commando at the keyboard?

There's not much that you can do.

You can't negotiate an end to Little Kim's programs because the US has proved that deals with the US arn't worth the paper they are printed on.

You can't get the neighbor's help because, ( see above) and China and Russia have their own interests,

You can't use the military option with out destroying both Korea's, big chunks of the US Pacific basing, destroying the world economy and possibly starting WWIII,

and Col. Pat Lang has run the number's, and due to all the current US wars of choice, the most the US can throw into a conflict in Korea, to reinforce US ground forces there, is a "light" Armobile Division of 15,000.

Or sit by and be blackmailed for generations, or have the nuke tech sold abroad, or perhaps have LA glow in the dark.

I think it is extremely cunning and smart to go for a 'diplomacy later' approach. They have done their homework and can rely on their partner China. They are safe. The US however - and the rest us of usually relaxing in the shade of the US - no longer will be. You have to understand, this is not some random nation seeking reliable methods of delivering icbm nukes. This is a country run by someone who allows himself to be called "God" and kills people incl family members in quite gruesome ways. But he knows he can rely on the Chinese to protect him. They just reconfirmed this at their yearly meeting. He knows. It's not like he's got balls the size of Jupiter and takes on the US alone. He just knows he is protected. The question is this: will our own madman accept this? WW3 is literally around the corner.

Or, like when the Soviets got the bomb,
China got the bomb,
Britain got the bomb,
France got the bomb,
India got the bomb,
Israel got the bomb,
Pakistan got the bomb,

Learn to deal with it through diplomacy, verification and communication.

Why is the US even involved at this point. To save face? To protect South Korea? The time to be all imperialistic and overrun the North killing swaths of people on the way is long gone. NK has achieved that level of armament where they could cause serious damage to SK, Japan and others even if it can't reach the US. Maybe a surprise attack, kinda like look out behind you old west style won't work.

Trying to enter into negotiations while laying down a stiff preset requirement is not counter productive, it is idiotic.

As for whether developing nukes is a defensive versus aggressive move, well that is a no brainer. It is a bit of both, maybe 50/50. The US has been actively using nuclear weapons in battle now for around 20 years. The best defensive in the face of a country like that is having nukes that can reach the USA and is as defensive as it is aggressive. It is what you and the world gets when they opened that particular can of worms.

Since there's nothing we can do based upon prior decisions, the options are 1.)fight a hopeless war against vastly more powerful adversaries we can't possibly hope to defeat because death is better than submission, 2.)upgrade and expand the nuclear arsenal to the point that it might actually be respected so that we can negotiate an honorable surrender whereby we preserve a modicum of dignity. Of course this will mean achieving good relations with Russia and China. 3.) Keep doing what we are doing. In this case the best case scenario is slavery for America under the control of its adversaries. Of course I don't expect America"s adversaries to be nearly so kind. After all, at least in the case of Russia, we have intervened incessantly in their affairs in ways contrary to their intersts over many years. To not expect a response against us would be naive.

This is really quite easy. Ask rhe top powers "how can we help you?" In exchange we"d like your help. Doing so would likely mean help in dealing with North Korea and Iran. America has much to offer Russia and China. We have much more to offer them tnan Iran and North Korea do. If only we had leadership that would orient us in the right direction.

Maybe just maybe Russia and China will be patient with us until we can get the proper leadership in place. I pray so.

Fazman,

You raise an interesting point. If I might impose on your patience, this is a bit like a high school student who hasn't done anything for four years and has repeatedly poked fingers in the eyes of the dominant powers at the school. Perhaps he had a suicice wish. Maybe he thought he wouldn't live anyway and wanted to go out in "a blaze of glory." Not only will he not graduate but he will stand humiliated before the entire town. He may even be killed as such people have been dragged by chains to tbeir death!!

In the case I've laid out, only tne highschool student is affected. In our case, the survival of America is at stake. The survival of Australia isn't.

As such, it's pretty easy for you to say what we ought to do. As for Americans many of us would appreciate it if our familes aren't sacrificed in unwinnable wars.

"To stupid to know you are stupid" pretty much sums up America's leadership. CAN WE PLEASE GET SANE LEADERSHIP?!!?
