BBC: South China Sea: Vietnam halts drilling after 'China threats'

Vietnam has reportedly terminated a gas-drilling expedition in a disputed area of the South China Sea, following strong threats from China.

A source in the south-east Asian oil industry has told the BBC that the company behind the drilling, Repsol of Spain, was ordered to leave the area.

It comes only days after it had confirmed the existence of a major gas field.

Those reports have been corroborated by a Vietnamese diplomatic source.

According to the industry source, Repsol executives were told last week by the government in Hanoi that China had threatened to attack Vietnamese bases in the Spratly Islands if the drilling did not stop.

China claims almost all of the South China Sea, including reefs and islands also contested by other nations.

If I were the Vietnamese I would be scared too.

China should note that Vietnam is called the Lesser Dragon. Should it mess with a dragon even though it is the Greater one?

Vietnam mauled China in the last great battle of the 1979 war with Russian help. Point being Vietnam can get lunch, while China is getting dinner. Afterwards, what shape will China be in?
___
Could China take the casualties it took then now?

People put up with it But that was in the immediate aftermath of Mao's successful attempt to regain power after being retired by the CCCP. Known as the Cultural Revolution, it should be know as another Red Terror. People were brainwashed an terrified. If they lost their sons, husband's and fathers in such great numbers now, would the CCCP be looked upon as competent or benevolent?

Would people object or rebel?

___
On the map is the UN "APPROVED" economic limit. Then there is the Chinese claim.
Which won out? What is the UN doing about it?

Better yet in common parlance WTF is the UN good for?

If Vietnam had a modern navy - even close to one - they might dare China to do just that.

The Vietnamese do plan to build a deep water port at Lien Chieu. "To accommodate ships with a draft greater than 40' and over 100,000 tons displacement"

China cannot bully all his neighbor permanently and going more and more threatening at wish. One day China will act...as Hitler did and that's not going to finish well.

We keep saying the Chinese have this great master plan and that they act towards a world leadership position. .all I see is chaos. .I'm in Vietnam and the people here are up in arms against the Chinese. ..they hate the Chinese. ..they think they are dirty. .today a Vietnamese friend complained about a Chinese woman peeing in public in front of a hotel and all the Vietnamese residents saw her doing her business.. it's just anecdotal, but many of these stories happen every day here, combined with water pollution by Chinese ore factory last year and there's 0 tolerance for Chinese south China Sea claims. ..the same is true with Japan, India, Philippines (a bit harder to read because of Duterte's double play but there's no love for Chinese there either)..the same in Australia. .China due to its greed and vulgar tourists is being despised all around and being surrounded by more and more hostile neighbours. ..there's no grand strategy by wise leaders. ..just a bunch of people trying to make money while fucking the environment and their neighbours. ..think of it. .. the emperor has no clothes and is just a dirty vulgar man. .that's China today in a nutshell
